Pie eating is a beloved tradition that is as American as baseball. In fact, Hall of Famer Yogi Berra is credited as saying, “Cut my pie into four pieces, I don't think I could eat eight.” When America, and especially the rich and fertile Hudson Valley region was settled by differing waves of Europeans, they all brought their pie making and pie eating traditions with them. English settlers mainly enjoyed meat pies, or “pyes”, similar to the Old-Fashioned Chicken Pot Pies we offer today. The German and Dutch settlers to the region brought their own recipes for sweets fruit tarts and Dutch desserts, with the first known Cherry Pie dating back to the 1500s. And of course, the Shakers of this Mount Lebanon region spoke and wrote of eating pie with every meal – breakfast, lunch, and dinner! Over the years, pie has evolved to become such a traditional and standard American dessert, that culturally we commonly use the term "as American as apple pie." Today, we present you with the finest pies, quiche, cookies, muffins, and other baked goods that New York's Hudson Valley has to offer!
